Blueprint Tokyo talks new music…

Blueprint Tokyo is an indie rock that spans multiple countries. We love hooks and the atmosphere. Andy and Kevin have been playing across the states for more than a decade. Being on the brink of full-time musicians, Kevin was diagnosed with a degenerative bone disease forcing him to stop. Without insurance, his diagnosis and treatment eventually came through charities, personal debt, and benefits. After a move to Canada, the duo reconnected to restart their musical journey. With a new lease on life and new songs in hand and emerging from the pandemic, their new band Blueprint Tokyo is starting fresh.

We managed to catch Blueprint Tokyo for an exclusive interview…

What inspired you to get into music?
We’re both mostly introverts and music is the way that we’ve expressed our feelings and really shared our emotions. Kevin and myself (Andy) got into music early on and after each of our bands ended we randomly found each other and we discovered we really worked well with each other. Kevin was diagnosed with a degenerative bone disease, and so right on the eve of us becoming full-time musicians, we had to put things on hold. At 29 he ended up getting hip replacements and had a long struggle with physical therapy and getting healthy. We started this new band as a way of hitting the reset button. We can’t fall back on our past catalog of songs or previously earned goodwill. It’s our time to bring forward new material and new sounds. So it’s an exciting and scary time but we’re also pretty excited.

How would you describe your music?
Our musical tastes are diverse. But we love hooks, we love catchiness, but we also equally love big atmospheric soundscapes. We describe Blueprint Tokyo as catchy and atmospheric indie rock.

What would you say is your recording and songwriting style?
We try and not to be precious about our recordings. It’s hard but we start simple and build from there. We demo and try a lot of things out but pretty quickly strong elements or even strong songs will suddenly emerge. Everything we do has to be rooted in support of the song. So whether it’s a melody, lyrics, or just a texture we want it to try and have meaning. Our process is pretty democratic, we both bring a lot of ideas and mix and match. Panic carefully is a good example where we collaborated closely on elements.

Where would you like to see your music career in 5 years time?
We love the energy and the power of the live experience. Obviously, over the past year and a half, there have been few live shows. Early in our careers, we viewed the studio as a necessary evil that we didn’t love. But we’ve really grown to love the freedom of recording and even working with others. Being able to work with or record other bands and continue to release music is our long-term goal.
